Homún, Yucatán, whose name in Maya means “Five Tender” (“Ho” five, “Mun” tender, young, or immature), is a Maya town with a rich cultural heritage and a deep connection with nature.
It is part of the fascinating Ring of Cenotes, a unique geological formation visible from space. This ring was created approximately 66 million years ago after the impact of an asteroid that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. The collision left a deep mark on the region, fracturing the ground and allowing cenotes to form in a circular pattern.
It is located approximately 34 miles (55 kilometers) southeast of Mérida, with an estimated travel time of 1 hour by road.
From Mérida to Homún by public transportation
One of the most affordable ways to reach Homún is by using the shared vans that depart from the city of Mérida and drop you off in the center of Homún. The terminal is located at the Dianay parking lot, on Calle 52 between Calle 65 and Calle 67, in downtown Mérida.
The trip costs approximately $45 MXN per person and the service operates daily from 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The journey takes around 1 hour, depending on traffic.

How to get around Homún?
Once in Homún, the most practical and traditional way to explore the town and reach the cenotes is by using mototaxis, the main local transportation option.

It is also possible to find taxis, although they usually provide transportation from nearby towns or Mérida. To visit the cenotes, most visitors use mototaxis or hire a tour with a local guide.

Some establishments offer a more complete experience, including access to multiple cenotes, swimming pools, restaurants, resting areas, showers, palapas, and other services.
Prices usually range from approximately $250 to $400 MXN per person, depending on the services included. Some packages may also include food, life jackets, or additional activities.
Other expenses to consider

Traditional festival of Homún, Yucatán
Every year, during the month of July, Homún celebrates its traditional festival in honor of San Buenaventura, the patron saint of the community.
For several days, the town comes alive with religious and cultural activities such as masses, guild celebrations, processions, traditional dances, musical events, bullfights, and local food stands, becoming one of the most important celebrations in the municipality.
